Sandwiches, Tattoos and Cruise Ships (and a banana, here or there)

Posted by: typealice In: Daily

There’s a sandwich contest that Clive and I are entering this week at a local deli. First prize is ten free sandwiches! Clive and I brainstormed today to create our sandwich creations in order to participate. Clive’s idea is chicken and bacon and bar-b-q sauce and tomato and lettuce. The kicker is the name he thought of: CBT. No one else on the island will get it except us! (However, they also have a sub named “The Hummer” (featuring hummus, of course) so I wouldn’t put anything past them. The second sandwich is a vegetarian one with mushrooms and pineapple and dill pickle slices and everything that I like, and Clive named that one: Notorious V.E.G. He’s clever!

One conversation that’s all too frequent on BME is tattoo theft or tattoo mimicking. I normally ignore those conversations because I find them fairly boring, but now I need advice! I received an email from someone today saying, “I just came across the tattoo of a comma you’ve got, I must say it kind of rang true with me and I’m thinking of getting something along the same kind of lines. Seeing as it’s your idea I thought I’d best check on your feelings of someone else emulating it.”

I do NOT like the idea of someone else having a comma- and especially having a comma because of it’s personal meaning. I plan on having commas incorporated into all of my future tattoos, so it’s not like it’s just one stupid tattoo. But who am I to give permission to someone or tell someone they’re not allowed to get it? It doesn’t seem fair. I’m stumped. Advice?

In other news. I’ve had my camera for a year and a half and have only recently discovered the digital zoom. I’m really impressed with the quality (I expected the pictures to be pixilated, but they’re not). Featuring: a cruise ship with thousands of overweight people aboard.

If you want some more inspiration for your sandwiches (as well as some veg ones), check out http://www.isaacsdeli.com. It’s a local sandwich place that has AMAZING sandwiches and is a favorite around here.

Here’s the real question…. what would you think if you met someone else with a comma tattoo and they hadn’t gotten their inspiration from you? Would you feel a connection with them because you both felt that commas spoke to you… or would you be resentful that someone else had the same good idea? In my opinion, there are only so many symbols or themes that can be tattooed on someone. There are bound to be overlaps. The real question is if they’re going to steal your placement as well as everything else. And I certainly believe that doing a 100% rip off of someone else’s tattoo is terrible, but I don’t find anything wrong with using someone else’s tattoo as a form of inspiration.

I agree with you Danielle. I don’t actually think there’s anything unique about tattoos anymore. I told the guy that I’d prefer if he didn’t get it with the same placement, but I didn’t feel right telling him NOT to get it. I mean, I didn’t invent the comma.

I give him props for asking “permission” though!

Exactly. If you’re the person he got the idea from, then he should at least let you know that he’s taking his inspiration from you. I’d actually find it flattering if someone told me they wanted a tattoo similar to one of mine. Stealing it exactly is tacky, but being inspired by it is cool.

ps-I found you on BME, and I’m from Nova Scotia too (originally Dartmouth, now living in Halifax). I started reading your Gambian blog yesterday, it was awesome. I read it for at least an hour.

:) That’s wonderful! I like it when people read that journal :)

And it’s always nice to have a NSian reading me.

i’m building a collection of trad sailor tattoos, “earning” them the old-fashioned way. Staying with that idea in mind, i ought to be getting a swallow soon, and another one after 5000 more offshore sailing miles. Does this make me another old-school trad-style tatoo junkie? i think not… no two well-executed tattoos will ever be truely identical, and even if they’re close, no two bodies will ever prove to be identical canvases. Ink is more than just adornment; it is a process that changes the recepient.
If, suddenly, comma tattoos start popping up all over, you could always make it into a semicolon; a mark that seperates two closely-related, yet individually complete ideas or clauses.
