St. Maarten Video

Posted by: typealice In: Daily| Gillian| Travelling| Videos

I went to St. Maarten before leaving the Caribbean, and made a video shortly thereafter, but haven’t put it online until now. I can’t promise it’s an exciting video, but I worked on it for a couple of hours and it’d be a shame to never let people see it. It’s mostly a bunch of airplanes taking off or landing, which is one of the things that St. Maarten is famous for. There’s a beach bar that is great for watching planes landing- and a friend and I spent a couple of hours there drinking beer and watching the planes.

Tortola is sometimes called “the armpit of the Caribbean” and I didn’t know what they meant until I was able to visit another developed island. St. Maarten was good for a visit, but I certainly wouldn’t want to live there- it’s all restaurants and casinos. But it did have BUILDINGS and GRASS and it looked NICE. It also had DELICIOUS food. (And, oh god, weird tourists- you’ll see them in minute-two.) The island is half French and half Dutch and we spent the weekend driving around, eating, shopping and going to casinos. After spending time in “the armpit,” things that normal people might consider to not be a big deal were a HUGE deal to me. They even warranted swearing, as you’ll see in the second scene (after the view of taking off from Tortola).

Enjoy! It’s a 10MB WMV file, and 4:05 minutes long.

About

I'm Gillian, a Nova Scotian woman with a son named Ash (born 09/07) and a wife to Clive. I am what they call an Attachment Parent; I breastfeed, wear my baby as much as possible, cosleep, cloth diaper and practice elimination communication. I have very strong parenting views. We are raising Ash as an organic vegetarian. I care about the environment and do what I can to reduce my carbon footprint and set a good example for others, especially my child.

I'm proudly drug free, but can't say that I have always been. My early 20s were comprised mostly of travelling- I've lived and worked everywhere from West Africa to the Caribbean. I currently run AP Mamas, a site dedicated to attachment parenting and G Slings, my sustainable sling company.
