This Week I’m Creating Fingerprints!

Posted by: typealice In: Baby| Daily

Some people have asked about baby registries (we aren’t there quite yet, but will be within the next week or two (or ten), even though I’m not yet out of my first trimester, guys!). They started asking immediately after the annoucement that I was pregnant. People love to buy baby things! Keep it up people!

Seeing as there is no real baby yet, and what little baby there actually is, is the size of a grape, we don’t really need anything. Except reading material, because, well, I’m creating a whole new person (a concept that totally blows my mind), and I need as much information as I can possibly get on ideas and things to do and not do when this thing is born, because as much as I love the internet and its wealth of knowledge, I do love having books on important subjects such as how not to fuck this kid up.

I purchased a few books (What to Expect etc) through Amazon on the actual day I found out I was pregnant, and have updated my WISHLIST to include other books I’d like. I LOVE second hand books, and they’re WAY cheaper, so that’s what I’d like, if your money really is burning a hole in your pocket.

Holy Mother of God, PLEASE return ‘What to Expect’ - I completely FORBID my clients to read it, it is GARBAGE. Whew, got that out of my system. What you might want, instead, is Sheila Kitzinger’s Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth. Please please believe me on this one. Also, try for a copy of it at abebooks.com. That one and Ina May Gaskin’s Guide to Childbirth. :) PS! I’m coming to London for the last weekend of April, solo… wanna do dinner?

Why does everyone hate that book?? I haven’t read any of it yet, but it’s so popular, I’m surprised it has such a bad rep.

As for dinner- DEFINITELY!

Actually I heard recently it’s now stopped printing…? Anyway it’s just crap. It’s very much a medicalized, scare the pants off you type of book. ‘This is what will happen TO you’, and without any real, balanced information or options. Blech! Sorry…. :) (Can’t wait for dinner!)

I agree, the “What to Expect…” book sucks… check it out at the library if you’re really curious. :)

I quite liked “The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: The Ultimate Guide to Conception, Birth, and Everything In Between” by Ann Douglas - there is a Canadian edition of this book (as
she is a Canadian author) which is quite nice.

If you want a frank, funny and sarcastic look at the next nine (ten) months, I also recommend
Jenny McCarthy’s book, “Belly Laughs”. This might be another one to check out from the
library, depending on what you think of Jenny McCarthy. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions, J. I’ve already purchased What to Expect (I bought it the day I found out I was pregnant), so I may take a look at it, but I won’t take it too seriously.

About

I'm Gillian, a Nova Scotian woman with a son named Ash (born 09/07) and a wife to Clive. I am what they call an Attachment Parent; I breastfeed, wear my baby as much as possible, cosleep, cloth diaper and practice elimination communication. I have very strong parenting views. We are raising Ash as an organic vegetarian. I care about the environment and do what I can to reduce my carbon footprint and set a good example for others, especially my child.

I'm proudly drug free, but can't say that I have always been. My early 20s were comprised mostly of travelling- I've lived and worked everywhere from West Africa to the Caribbean. I currently run AP Mamas, a site dedicated to attachment parenting and G Slings, my sustainable sling company.
