Crazy Wicked

So, I have a new group of mommy friends. My main mommy friend is about 12+ years older than me and has a baby girl that’s three months younger than Ash. We met through our doula back in December, before she gave birth. We have a good time, but there is a bit of disconnect between us- I think it’s the age thing. But a mommy friend is a mommy friend, and as moms know, they’re pretty great to have around, regardless.

We were taking a walk last month and came across another mom, Sophie, playing in our local playground with her son, Sam. We’d never met before, but we were all excited to meet one another and made a plan to get together again the following week. My main mommy friend thought it would be a good idea to put up signs around our neighborhood, advertising our play date and it worked really well- seven moms (including myself) showed up! And it just so happened that ALL of us breastfeed, and I think we may also all cloth diaper too. Amazing. Especially considering the statistics of Nova Scotian breastfeeding moms after three months (17 lousy percent). We’ve had a couple more playdates and I’m absolutely in love with having a group of friends again!

Sophie and I actually got together today with our boys (who are about two weeks apart in age, which is great!) solo for about two hours and we talked about going back to work, getting pregnant again, trying to make ends meet and starting an Etsy shop. Since I’m pretty experienced with Etsy, I showed her the ropes and we got an account started for her homemade cards. It’s so fun to show people things like that because they start getting excited about having a place to sell their creativity.

Tomorrow morning another mom, who has an eight month old (?) and is quite close to my age and I are going for a walk. I tend to be nervous about these one-on-one meetings, but any mom will attest to the fact that moms can talk for hours about parenting and about their children, so I really have no reason to be nervous. She’s great and funny and I’m really looking forward to it.

Other exciting things are in the works for me. Last week I dropped off another batch of slings at P’lovers, and met with one of the owners who agreed to take on TWENTY of my zipper pouches. Holy cow, you cannot even imagine how excited I was. There’s other things that’s happening with them that I’ll discuss at a later date, but oh my gosh, I could have skipped and hopped all the way back to my car. When I got in, I said to Ash, “ASH! YOUR MOM IS SOOOOO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!” and then I let out a very loud, “WHOOOO HOOOOOO!!!” and probably scared the crap out of him. And then I had a hard time falling asleep for TWO nights because of my discussion with one of the owners. Good things are happening, people. I feel great.

Tonight, after several nights and all nursing sessions of coming up with a pattern in my head, I made a winter baby bonnet out of recycled fabrics, including a wool (or wool blend, I can’t tell) outter layer. It’s cute. I’m going to wrangle Ash tomorrow and make him wear it for some pictures. If it works out, I may be able to add it to my roster of things that I make to sell. Speaking of which, here’s what going to be my tag that’s attached to all of my products except my slings…

I’m happy for you. I don’t make friends that easily and I worry that I won’t have many mommy friends. What luck to have so many like-minded moms show up. My friend who has a two year old joined a mommy group and said that only two other women had similar (ap) beliefs as her.

I don’t know how I would have dealt with a CIO mom- I probably wouldn’t have come back to the playgroup. Other things I am a bit more lenient on, even though I don’t agree with them, like formula, disposible diapers, etc. Most of the moms in my playgroup just happen to have a lot of AP beliefs, so I feel extremely fortunate. Sophie even borrowed my book on ECing!

Moms have this unspoken bond that I think only moms can even imagine- it’s hard to really explain it to non-parents, and it’s really hard for non-parents to be able to imagine it working.

Parents just have so much in common!

upcycled pretty much means recycled… or taking something and making something else out of it. i didn’t want to use the word “recycled” because it makes me think of complete destruction and then rebuilding (ie juice pack boxes made into picnic tables or something), and i didn’t want people to think there was a lot of processing with these fabrics.
