A New Apartment

Posted by: typealice In: Baby|Daily|G Slings|Gillian|I <3 Clive

Before Clive and I left for our honeymoon we signed a lease on an apartment that I’d been eyeing for months. The owner was renovating the entire thing, and I really liked the location (two blocks from our current place) and literally right next door to my sister. We share a chimney. I met the owner several months ago and told her to call me when she was finished renovating. The top floor of the house was rented without me seeing it (it was too expensive anyway, $1000 plus all utilities), but the day that the “For Rent” sign went into the window, I called her and made an appointment.

It’s got nearly everything that we were looking for. Two bedrooms (one bedroom that will be my office), hardwood floors, a backyard, and in a great location. It only has a washer and dryer hookup, but I was willing to accept that I may not be able to find somewhere that has a washer and dryer (little did I know at the time of signing the lease just how expensive washers and dryers actually are. Holy shit) and I mentally prepared myself for the idea that I was going to have to buy two new appliances.

The rent was high, higher than we were originally willing to go, but we both liked the apartment, so we said yes. Now, two weeks later, WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE WERE THINKING. Clive actually verbalized his wish yesterday that the place would BURN DOWN before we moved in (if it coincidentally does burn down for some reason, he was only joking!! pleasedontsueus so we could get out of it. Utilities are not included. Rent is almost as high as our current place that has five appliances and has utilities included. We’re pretty much up shit creek as far as expenses go. Seriously. I have no idea what we’re going to do. But we’ve locked ourselves into this agreement and there’s nothing we can do about it. So, we’re just going to try to enjoy it.

I’m getting the keys next weekend where we’ll spend a few hours cleaning- it’s got that horrible chemical smell from Mr. Clean and Lysol right now, and then start moving our stuff in. The moving process will take a week- I’m going to take a couple of stroller loads every day and let Ash play around in our unheated apartment and new backyard while I imagine the next ten months (it’s only a ten month lease, luckily) being extremely concious of every light that’s on and every shower that I take and how it’d be a good idea to invest in a pair of slippers for each of us because we’ll keep the thermostat really low.

Part of me is okay with having to pay the electricity bill because it’ll make me even more aware how much energy I waste, resulting in me being even MORE eco-friendly. So, I really shouldn’t complain that much (though I probably still will).

Our honeymoon was great. Cuba had perfect weather most of the time that we were there (the last two days were a bit rainy). The food was okay- a bit bland- as we’d been warned- the drinks were aplenty (Clive would often have his first pina colada at 10am), the beach was beautiful, the ocean was warm, the pool was clean, Ash didn’t stop walking and exploring for ONE SINGLE MINUTE from the time he woke up in the morning until the time he fell asleep at night. There was even one night where he slept straight for six hours. A new record.

Clive and I don’t know what to blame it on, whether it’s the ocean air or the constant alcohol intake or the heavy meals at the end of the day, or maybe just catching up on lots and lots of sleep lost in the past year, but he and I were exhausted by 8:30pm every night and so that’s when we’d join Ash and go to sleep. We never went out once for nightly entertainment, we’d much rather sleep.

Having my parents there was great for the times that Clive and I wanted to spend an hour and a half in the water. It was great to not have to entertain him first thing in the morning. It was great to have them on the plane to play with him while Clive and I were actually able to watch a whole movie (Henry Poole is Here) from start to finish. We didn’t spend as much time away from Ash as we’d originally planned, but that’s our fault- we just love spending time as a family together- something we only get to do one day a week- but it all worked out in the end.

I don’t think we’ll ever do the all inclusive resort thing again, but I do have to admit it was really relaxing being able to eat what I wanted to and drink what I wanted to without having to worry about the cost. In my mind, drinking a beer is like this: “I would love a beer. But it’s $4. Do I really need to drink BEER? Too many empty calories. I guess I’ll just have a water.” I don’t like unnecessarily spending money, so it was nice to not have to worry about that. The money had already been spent, so I could actually think of drinking my beer as getting it free!

Speaking of money. My Christmas list is really… pitiful. There are so many things that I’d like to buy for myself, things I’ve been living without but would like to have in order to make my “housewife” life easier. For example, these are some things I’m asking for:

  • A new duvet- the inside part- not the cover
  • A stainless steel colander with legs so pasta doesn’t touch the bottom of the sink
  • A small colander for rinsing things like rice and quinoa
  • My own Kleen Kanteen
  • A really nice can opener
  • A Beco Butterfly baby carrier
  • A heavy wooden sewing table
  • An ergonomic chair or one of those big yoga/pilates balls, or both
  • A nice way to display my threads
  • A new alarm clock

Yep, all I want is stuff so I can cook and sew and be a mom. Except for the Kleen Kanteen. Oh, and when I linked this clock on my Facebook account yesterday, my sister in law told me to remove that status update if I actually wanted it for xmas so that she could buy it for me and be the only one. Isn’t that the nicest clock you’ve ever seen? The other alarm clock on my list is in addition to this one.

I’ve been busy sewing (as usual) lately, and have started making bib and burp cloth sets. They’ll also be sold at P’lovers, just as soon as I drop them off this week. I am absolutely in love with them. Here’s Ash sporting one.

I hear you on the electricity bill! I would love to extend some un-asked-for advice, learned from years of cheap – I mean, “thrifty” living through 7 years of higher education:
Unplug things you aren’t using! I realize this is not rocket science, but – hair dryer, lamp in the corner, cell phone charger, blender etc. These things are small, but they are an electricity suck, even if they aren’t on. Don’t pay for vampire appliances! Some things (fridge) have to stay plugged in, obviously, but it doesn’t take too long to get used to plugging things in before you use them, and unplugging them when they sit dormant. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is make it part of your night and morning routine, since those are some long night-time hours in which no one is using the microwave or sewing machine.
I’m not sure what your internet setup is like in Canada (or in your house specifically), but if you need a house phone on top of cell phones, it is incredibly cheap to use your cable line for the telephone. Like unlimited calling for $15 dollars a month cheap. (I don’t know the exchange rate, but obviously that’s not very much, especially when our phone companies charge nearly double that for just local calls!)
I hope the extra space makes up for the higher bills – also, your son is *so* cute! I love his little mouth!

i’d suggest looking for a washer/dryer on craigslist and http://www.usedhalifax.com... my roommate and i found a set for $50 on usedvictoria a couple of months ago. (unfortunately the washer started leaking like crazy a week ago, but it was working fine before that so i think it’s probably an unlucky coincidence.)

Kijiji.ca is another site for buying used local goods, also try your local freecycle! If money is super tight and you can’t find a cheap dryer, why not NOT get one? I use a 3 tier, folding drying rack…my sister (who has two kids) has 2 of them and dries her loads in the basement. The rack will hold a FULL load of laundry and it dries in a day, a few hours if you have it by the heating.

Amanda: We went there yesterday night. Prices were actually more expensive than the regular Sears I went to today.

I’m seriously contemplating whether or not we need a dryer. In reality, they’re super convenient and air drying isn’t the best method for cloth diapering (dryers make them more absorbant somehow). I do plan on hanging clothes to dry as much as possible.

The problem with buying old appliances is that they’re not energy efficient and are more likely to break down. Clive and I thought a lot about it and I’d rather get a new one that’s going to cost less to operate than an old one that’s on its last legs and that will eat up dollars with every spin cycle. I’ve checked our local kijiji and would only buy used if they were purchased within the past two years- and nothing’s there. Oh well…

You don’t need a land line if you’re a DSL subscriber. All you need is what’s called a closed loop, which will not deliver a dial tone to you, but you’ll be able to use DSL on the line. I don’t know about cost to you but it’ll be far less costly than a full service line with your telco.

Are you going to be selling the bib/burp sets online at all? I really was impressed by the quality your sling had and I’d like to support you further while keeping my niece as cute (and as clean) as a button.

Danielle: I’m selling them online right now at gslings.com. I have to send most of them to P’lovers tomorrow- so if there’s one there that you like a lot, please buy it now (or you can custom order one too), or it’ll be gone by tomorrow.

As for phones, we don’t own cell phones and have a bundle with our provider for telephone and internet. I’ll have to look into the other options in our area for phone. We have no long distance costs, so we only pay about $35/month as it is.

Purchase completed!

$35/monthly is a fair price for your bundle. I don’t think you could get much lower than that.

get the exercise ball, way better than an ergo chair.
put about 1-2 lbs of sand in it and it wont roll away when you arent sitting on it.
i love mine, it was the best when i was pregnant and now Zoey falls right asleep when we bounce on it at the computer.

dont skimp on the washer/dryer, what you pay upfront will make up for the energy bill. my set has already paid for itself twice over in a year and it was expensive.
we run ours twice a day.

I’m so glad my renting days are over. I always had a cat and it was impossible to find a reasonably priced apartment that allowed pets. My husband and I are very fortunate that we found our house. Our mortgage payments are under $450/mo and we have a three storey house with plenty of room and a backyard.

I hear you about the washer and dryer too. When I was a renter I bought a pair and I held onto them forever. I had in storage until Don finally convinced me to sell them.

You guys will make it work. Can’t wait to see pics of the new place.

Danielle: No, sorry- our full bundle price is about $85. $35 is just for the phone.

Oh, and I’m way too commitment-phobic for buying just yet. That, and the major, enormous fear of being in debt further than we already are! :D One day, though… one day.

Do you have freecycle in Canada? We got all of our furniture for our new house on freecycle for nothing (except the cost of a van to collect things)! It saved us nearly £1000!!! Some of the stuff people give away is amazing and really good quality.

http://www.freecycle.org/

If you have a network in your area im sure you could get a washer/ dryer from there.

If it’s really that bad a deal, maybe you could talk to the lady? Just be honest about what happened..you fell in love with it, but now think you cna’t afford it. Maybe she’d let you out of the agreement with a not so bad fee. Just wondering. Dont’ know how bad the rent is..but if it’s bad enough..paying a fee is still better than being stuck there for 12 months.

We thought about that, but then we’d have nowhere to live. Our current apartment is booked for Dec 1. :(
