Purses, of all things

Posted by: typealice In: Daily

Today was a hard day in Parenting Land. Ash has started nursing every 30-45 minutes for hours and hours at a time for the past few nights, which KILLS ME, and then today he wanted to nurse for oh, seven hours before taking his nap. I lasted about 45 minutes of comfort sucking before I was like SCREW THIS, I’M WEANING YOU FOREVER!!!!!!! And took a walk outside to calm down. Of course I’m not actually weaning him, but there are times I feel like making him go cold turkey. No more boob! There’s a 20 minute time limit on these puppies!

But now he’s asleep and I feel like a calm and collected mother again and I just finished a piece of cake and a half glass of wine even though I’m going to bed in 20 minutes.

So I started making purses of all things. It just kind of started the other day, I’m not even sure why, especially considering I’m not a purse person at all. But I have all this fabric. Hundreds of pounds of fabric, quite literally, and only some of it is useful for slings, even less of it is interesting enough for zipper pouches, and so I thought I’d try it out. Sewing slings and zipper pouches gets boring after a while anyway.

My first bag is just an oversized one without any structure that I’ll use for groceries. I accidentally sewed the strap on upside down. It’s a wool blend very subtle plaid fabric (like a man’s suit) on the outside, and red lining.

Cute, right?

Next came my pride and joy, the purple peacock which is a much nicer purse in real life. I love oversized purses, even though I can never figure out why women need to carry so much junk. I love this purse. I love the peacock fabric (I also made a sling out of it, for the bold mamas out there), which it’s accented with and the inside of the purse is lined with it too.

I think this next purse is hilarious. It’s a mustard cordoroy and a few pieces of upholstery fabric, most notably is the chicken print down the front. I love those chickens! I’ve made a couple of zipper pouches out of them, but I think it deserves more attention so I made it into a purse. The shape is… unique. I hadn’t quite meant to have it come out like this, but there it is. Maybe someone out there will love it.

And lastly, tonight I worked on this piece. Pockets on the inside were the most time consuming (including a zippered pocket). I think this fabric used to be an old curtain. It is SO UGLY, yet it is strikingly beautiful. I absolutely love this purse. I drew out what I wanted it to look like, cut the fabric and there ya go. The flash on the last picture makes the mossy green look much more vibrant than it actually is. The top picture is a better representation of the colours.

I’m going to try to take some nice photos of them and put them up on Etsy when I’ve got a couple more finished. They’re fun to make, if anything.

There’s this holiday candy here in Nova Scotia that I’ve eaten ever since I can remember. It’s different shaped animals, huge chunks of sugar, often without sticks. They’re pretty hard to eat, yet delicious. No flavoring- just sugar.

I cut my tongue on one today. It bled for half an hour! Sliced it open like a piece of glass. Ouch.

Hey, how much would you charge for the striped purse? I’ve fallen in love with it and boogied over to etsy but it’s not up yet. I adore it.

Purses on Etsy tend to go between 45-125. I was going to price the striped one at $65(usd) because of the pockets on the inside (one open, one zippered). I can take a picture of the inside if you like. :)

Thanks for loving them!

Hey Gillian, just popped by to check you out.
I love the purses especially the “ugly” one, really fun shape and colors. The chicken purse is a riot! Have you been into that Lucky Lady shop in the Hydrostone? I bet they would sell well in there.

Jessica: I went in to ask about my slings, but they never got back to me. I’m going to try to perfect my bags a bit before going back. I also have to start it up under a different name, since G Slings doesn’t really suit my purses.

They carry other bags right now, but I’m thinking maybe going for larger bags and seeing if they’re interested.

Sidenote: I’m so glad you blog!! :D
