New Ideas for Pip

Posted by: typealice In: Pip

Pip Robins has been slowing down for the season, even though winter just started a couple of weeks ago. The business is a far cry from the months of getting several orders of cowls a day. There was one evening where I got seven orders in four hours. No more daily post office trips, no more sewing until midnight. I have more spare time than I know what to do with, and to be honest, it makes me a little uncomfortable. Now that crafting is in my life, I don’t know what I did without it! It feels very weird. I much prefer to be busy all night than sit around and do nothing.

Since cowls are so seasonal, I’m struggling to come up with a new idea for warmer weather. I am tired of purses, even though I have a dozen of them cut out and ready to sew, I just can’t bring myself to finish them. Making them brought out the creative side to my personality, something I’d never delved into before, outside of writing, I suppose. I don’t want to let Pip Robins die during the warmer months, so I have to find a new product.

I’m experimenting with these collars that I invented. I haven’t seen anything like this out there, ever. Sure, there are lots of different kinds of collars, but these ones are reversible and close with a magnetic clasp (I was accidentally sent the wrong size clasps by a supplier, so I had nothing to do with them until I figured these out). I was walking to pick up Ash from daycare one day and trying to figure out a closure other than a button or a snap (neither of which I’m good at doing), and the magnetic clasp popped into my head and I got SO excited that I could hardly wait to go home and sew my prototype (which you can see in my About page).

I was originally thinking about making the ones with clasps for children, but since my son is a terrible clothing model (he just wants to rip them off), I couldn’t really showcase them properly, so I never ended up doing them.

I don’t know. I really like them, I like to wear them, and I’m hoping they catch on for the rest of the year. Last year everyone was wearing those fashion scarves, so in an ideal world, people should switch to cowls!

While I personally would not wear one (I am so not that cool) I think those are pretty awesome!! Go for it! Can’t hurt to try! I can see Dooce wearing one! :)

Dooce is wearing the cowl that was featured on her gift guide!

Jon bought it for her the day the gift guide came out, and THAT was the most exciting thing ever, until I came home and saw her entry where I was featured!

I sent it expresspost so it’d get there by xmas, but the postal system screwed up and it took over two weeks to get there – missing xmas altogether. I spent $23 on postage for nothing! (though, I did get a full refund from Canada Post today, which is good.)

He told me to keep it quiet until she got it, so I couldn’t even blog about it!

i am not sure i could pull these off, but i think they’re interesting.

just a suggestion: something I LOVE TO WEAR all year round is arm/wrist warmers. (i refer to them as ‘handsocks’ for some reason) anyway – i can never find a light enough material for the warmer months, but i’ll wear them on summer night’s when it’s cool out.

they’re a neat way to accessorize my hands and different from just wearing jewelry or a watch, etc. but they’re mostly made out of thicker materials.

I’ve been in the middle east for the past few weeks, so when I arrived home in the US yesterday I was greeted with a package from Pip Robins! My cowl came in! Yay! I haven’t worn it yet, but when I go walk my dogs this morning I will take it out for a spin.

Regarding the “collars” I would TOTALLY wear those. The ones you have in your entry are gorgeous. Here’s the thing – I wear business suits a lot and I like to wear scarves, but scarves are a little much. Silk squares (to do the whole French tie-around-your-neck thing) are a bit dated now (still classy, but a bit dated). So I could see myself wearing one of your collars with a suit. And, since it would have a magnetic clasp, that means no ruining the hair/makeup and the ease of removing if/when necessary. Love the idea. ;)

If you could figure out how to pattern these, I love them: http://planetbuff.com/blog/wear/ . Cowl, wristband, and headwear in one ;)

I made a collar once (view C of this: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=10132 ) and I’ve gotten a few uses out of it…

Okay, status update: walked the dogs in the frigid morning air (10F) and my cowl kept my face nice and toasty from my exhalations. NICE! My new favorite accessory. =)

Meghan: YAY! I love my cowl for my chilly walks to and from work every day. It really does a great job of standing up to cover my cheeks. :)

I’m just going to throw this out there: Sock wallets. (http://tinyurl.com/ybchv2c)

They’re SO cute! Maybe not an “original” but you could definitely put your own spin on it.

oye!

ok- so I’ve just spent over an hour reading your blog to try and update myself on what you’ve been up to for the past.. hmm.. 6 or 7 months ;) but had to comment on this thread.

first off, I actually love these. I’ve never worn a cowl or anything similar- ever. well, maybe my parents forced a dickie on me as a kid but thats it. but these cross overs I somehow adore. pull off? prolly not so much!

my vote is for you to make some most awesome fabric ankle cuffs and knee-highs- if they have cute button up bottms I’ll die! also- what about belts??? you could use the same style here and make big cross over belts to wear with shawls or those super long cardigan/sweater dresses or even to top off pencil skirts?

anyway, back to my reading.
miss ya!

oooh ps- Ive been needle felting lately and could make you some cute little birdies or a squirel etc for your wreathe. let me know- draw something up and send it to me if you have something specific in mind.
